What is Guest Blogging?

Guest blogging is a method of gaining exposure & blog traffic by writing content for other websites. Used as a classic method of link building for niche related blogs, Guest blogging typically works in two ways:

  • Someone writes a Guest Post for your website
  • You write a Guest Post on someone else’s website

Beware that websites have used guest blogging in the past as a way to build cheap links, so the modern Google algorithm is not particularly keen on the practice. Google is particularly opposed to using guest blogging as a link building strategy since most guest blogs link back to an author’s website.

To summarize why this practice no longer works as well as before, Matt Cutts explains circa 2014:
Ultimately, this is why we can’t have nice things in the SEO space: a trend starts out as authentic. Then more and more people pile on until only the barest trace of legitimate behavior remains. We’ve reached the point in the downward spiral where people are hawking “guest post outsourcing” and writing articles about “how to automate guest blogging.”
